SearchSummit - Climb to the Top of the Search Engines
What is Search Engine Optimization? Why is it Important? How do you do it? How Soon Will I See Results? How Much Does It Cost?

Search Engine Optimization is the application of various strategies to increase the likelihood that your web site will achieve top placement in the search results when someone searches on a phrase related to your product or service.

You've probably received spam emails offering to submit your site to thousands of search engines for a monthly fee that seems very reasonable ($29 or so) or guaranteeing top rankings in Google within a week.

Search engines are by far the most important method for finding companies and information on the Internet.

Search Engine Optimization is quite cost-effective, and even if you are pursuing other forms of marketing, it's one base that should be covered.

Consider the following evidence...

Search engine positioning is not rocket science, but it is a science, and an art. You can purchase software that automates aspects of it, but there's a learning curve, and even after you've mastered it, search engine optimization is a time consuming process. Most Search Engine Optimization companies use either of two basic billing methods. Some use a "pay-per-hit" system in which you pay a sizeable account set-up fee and then pay an additional fee (from $.25 up to $2!) for each unique visitor to your web site. I don't like this system for several reasons. The first is that, in a sense, it penalizes you for success. I want you to feel happier as your traffic increases - to enjoy increasing profits - and not to feel any pinch because increasing traffic is driving your bill sky high.
